The National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery in London housing a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people. It was the first portrait gallery in the world when it opened in 1856.
Cross-cultural dimensions
The National Portrait Gallery categorises its artwork through a ‘People, Portraits and Places’ system, meaning it presents a selection of its art pieces from around 30 European countries and provides cross-cultural, transnational information about each of the pieces, how they relate to their existence and relevance in both the UK and their country of origin.
