History and teachings
The National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery in London housing a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people. It was the first portrait gallery in the world when it opened in 1856.

The National Portrait Gallery categorises its artwork through a ‘People, Portraits and Places’ system, meaning it presents a selection of its art pieces from around 30 European countries and provides cross-cultural, transnational information about each of the pieces, how they relate to their existence and relevance in both the UK and their country of origin.
